Mehndi Mud from LifeArt Productions is now available at Stitch by Stitch. Mehndi Mud is made to exacting specifications and in the ayurvedic tradition.

Mehndi is the art of applying henna paste to decorate and stain the skin leaving a temporary tattoo. Traditional designs and application are used in different countries of the Middle East, Asia Minor and Africa. The henna plant was found to be effective in keeping the body cooler in extremely hot climates - feet and hands were totally immersed and stained in the henna mixture. Later the art of decoration became popular. This in turn led to the art form being used as charms, blessings and for religious ceremonies.

Today in the West, we may use the art of Mehndi for all of the same reasons or just for fun. True henna does NOT come in different colors. When henna is applied to the skin, it stains the skin. The area of the body, your skin type, the length of time the henna is left on the skin, repeat applications and body temperature, all affect the final color - from a light reddish brown to a deep burnt sienna brown.

Duration of the design is also affected by the above conditions, plus exposure to external elements such as chlorine, water, soap, daily cleansing, sun and every day wear. When exposure to harsh elements, or when bathing and swimming is expected, applying a small amount of vegetable-based oil over the area helps to retain the Mehndi art. Avoid the use of petroleum-based products and those containing lanolin.

You may expect your henna design to last from one to three weeks, depending on the aforementioned conditions. Your design will gradually fade away through the body's natural process of skin exfoliation.

After the henna paste is allowed to dry, scrape off the paste, do NOT wash off. Leaving the paste on as long as possible will result in a darker stain.

Stitch by Stitch will be applying the art of Mehndi on Mondays - please call for an appointment.

Henna should not be used during pregnancy, near the eyes or on cut or abraded skin. A preview test of 24 hours in advance should be applied to detect any allergic reactions. If your skin becomes red or swollen, discontinue use immediately.
